The public portal is free, requires acceptance of a judiciary disclaimer, and covers New Mexico Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, District Court, Magistrate Court, and limited Municipal Court data. It is useful for finding the court location, case number, filing or hearing dates, case category, and basic case status. It does not provide public document downloads, and it warns against bulk downloading under NMSA 1978, Section 14-3-15.1.
The Case Lookup screen matters in San Juan County because several courts may hold related records. District Court location 1116 covers Farmington and Aztec. Magistrate Court search values include Farmington and Aztec, while municipal options include Aztec, Bloomfield, and Farmington. The court system says District and Magistrate case information is updated daily and is current within 24 hours after data is entered. Municipal data is limited to historic criminal domestic violence and DWI convictions beginning September 1, 1991.

Types of San Juan County Court Records
San Juan County court records are split by court role. District Court is the general-jurisdiction trial court for felony criminal cases, major civil cases, domestic relations, juvenile jurisdiction, lower-court appeals, mental health matters, and contested estate disputes. Magistrate Court handles limited civil claims, landlord-tenant cases, misdemeanors, DWI/DUI, other traffic violations, and felony preliminary hearings. Municipal courts handle petty misdemeanors, city ordinance matters, DWI/DUI, and traffic violations inside city limits. The County Probate Court handles informal and uncontested estate matters.
County Clerk records are separate from court case records. The County Clerk records deeds, liens, plats, mortgages, oil and gas leases, marriage licenses, and other recorded documents. The County Clerk explicitly does not hold divorce records; divorce is a District Court matter. Jail booking records are also separate, held through the Adult Detention Center rather than the District Court Clerk.

What San Juan County Court Records Show
Public court records normally show case identifiers, court location, parties, filing or hearing dates, docket activity, charges where applicable, and disposition information. It does not show Social Security numbers or address information, and it does not provide case documents for download. For San Juan County users, that distinction between public case data and document access is often the key access limit.
Public Access to San Juan County Court Records
New Mexico's public-record framework gives broad access to public records while allowing limits for protected case types, sealed material, and online data use. NMSA 1978, Section 14-2-1 recognizes the right to inspect public records unless an exception applies. For written requests, NMSA 1978, Section 14-2-8(D) requires the requester to provide name, address, telephone number, and a reasonably particular description of the records sought.
Rule 1-079 NMRA treats court records as public unless sealed by court order or protected by rule or law. Restricted San Juan County Court Records
Several San Juan County court record categories are not displayed through public Case Lookup. Juvenile criminal cases have not been displayed effective July 1, 2007. Family Violence Protection Act order-of-protection cases have not been displayed effective July 1, 2008. Personal identifying information, such as Social Security numbers and address information, is not shown. Case documents are also outside the public Case Lookup display, even when the case itself appears.
Registered access does not mean every record is open. re:SearchNM Tier 2.1 includes delinquency proceedings in Children's Court cases. Tier 2.5 includes abuse and neglect, families in need of court-ordered services, adoption, and mental health proceedings, with strict protections. Expunged criminal records and sealed records require special treatment under the Criminal Records Expungement Act and Rule 1-079. If a court record is sealed, public access usually requires a court order or other authorized access.
San Juan County Court Record Requests
In-person and direct requests should go to the court that holds the case file. District Court case records may be at Aztec District Court or Farmington District Court. Magistrate matters may be at Aztec or Farmington Magistrate Court. City citation or ordinance cases may require contact with Aztec, Bloomfield, or Farmington Municipal Court. Informal probate matters may be with the County Probate Court, while contested estate litigation belongs in District Court.
The New Mexico Courts IPRA form asks for the court location and the specific court or department believed to hold the records.
